Installation

Portland Cement Mortar:

Floors - 1/4" in 10'.......... Walls - 1/4" in 8'

Dry-Set, Latex or Epoxy Mortars:

Floors - 1/8" in 10'.......... Walls - 1/8" in 8'

Preparation Prior to the start of laying tile, sweep or vacuum and wash all surfaces to be covered. Surface should be free from coating, curing compounds, oil, grease, wax and dust.

Job Conditions A minimum temperature of 50ûF (10ûC) should be maintained during tile work and for seven (7) days thereafter. Provide adequate lighting for installation, grouting and clean-up.

Layout of Work Determine locations of all movement (expansion) joints before starting tile work. Lay out all tile work so as to minimize cuts less than one-half tile in size. Locate cuts in both floors and walls so as to be least conspicuous. Align all floor and wall joints to give straight and uniform grout lines.

Setting Methods Methods shown are examples only. Specify method that is required.

On Dimensionally Stable Concrete ANSI A108.1 (Reference TCA Method F112, Cement Mortar Bonded)

On Non-Dimensionally Stable Concrete Sub-Floor, ANSI A108.1 (Reference TCA Method F111, Cement Mortar, Cleavage Membrane)

On Wood Sub-Floor, ANSI A108 (Reference TCA Method F141, Cement Mortar)

On Wood Sub-Floor, ANSI A108.6 (Reference TCA Method F143, Epoxy Mortar)

See the current TCA "Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation" for other methods of installing tile work.

Grouting Follow grout manufacturer's recommendation as to grouting procedures and precautions. Remove all grout haze, observing grout manufacturer's recommendations as to the use of various cleaners.

Finishing Thoroughly rinse all tile work. Use neutral cleaners for final cleaning. Acid cleaners are not recommended.

Protection of Tile Surface

Finished installation should be free of all chipped, cracked, defective or unbonded tile.

Cover all tile floors with heavy duty construction or kraft paper masked in place to avoid stains or damage from construction traffic.

No foot and wheel traffic can use the floor for a minimum of 3 days, preferably 7 days.

Place large, flat boards in high traffic areas to protect newly tiled floor.
